General Description
Trains at the Police Academy as a new police recruit to learn the skills and functions of the job of police officer, under the guidance of experienced police staff.
Essential Functions
Attends the Police Academy to learn the skills and practices of a Police Officer.

Assists with performing patrol duties by traveling through designated areas, searching for suspicious, hazardous or criminal activity, conducting field interviews with suspected offenders and making arrests.

With another officer, responds to routine and emergency calls by contacting the reporting person and witnesses, and determining the nature of the call and action to be taken.

Assists with crime prevention by attending public meetings, enforcing criminal and traffic laws, and identifying gang members and criminals.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Education Level & Type: High School Diploma or G.E.D.

Minimum Experience Qualifications: No experience required

Valid and Unrestricted Class D - Driver's License

Special Job Requirements
At least two (2) years of driving experience

U.S. Citizenship

At least 21 years of age by academy graduation date

No felony convictions or drug abuse

Selection Plan
Applicants who successfully complete an employment application, successfully complete the Preliminary Applicant Questionnaire and meet the minimum qualifications of the position will receive an email containing an invitation for the written and physical test by the close of business on Friday, June 7, 2019.

Written Examination- The written examination will be conducted Friday, June 21, 2019, Saturday, June 22, 2019, and Sunday, June 23, 2019 at the Public Safety Academy, located at 10001 S. Wilmot Road, Tucson, AZ 85756. Applicants will choose a testing day and time best accommodating their schedule.

Physical Fitness Assessment- The physical fitness assessment will be conducted Friday, June 21, 2019, Saturday, June 22, 2019, and Sunday, June 23, 2019 at the Public Safety Academy, located at 10001 S. Wilmot Road, Tucson, AZ 85756. Applicants will choose a testing day and time best accommodating their schedule.

This is a pass/fail portion of the process and it is based upon Cooper's Institute Standards. The modified Cooper's will include all elements of the standard Cooper's minus the vertical jump. You must obtain an overall average of 40% in order to pass. It is your responsibility to know your own physical condition. Individuals who are in a poor state of physical conditioning will have difficulty passing this examination. Your participation is at your own risk and the City of Tucson assumes no liability or responsibility for any injuries you may incur during this process

Cooper's Physical Assessment: Your overall percentage is determined by averaging your obtained percentile scores for the:

1.5 mile run - This fitness area measures cardiovascular endurance and is related to performing tasks that may involve sustained activity such as a long foot pursuit followed by a physical confrontation and taking someone into custody. There is no walking allowed during this evolution.
300 meter run - This fitness area measures anaerobic capacity and is related to performing short intense bursts of effort such as foot pursuits. There is no walking allowed during this evolution.
Sit-ups - This fitness area measures muscular endurance of the abdominal muscles and is related to performing tasks that may involve the use of force.
Push-ups - This fitness area measures muscular endurance of the upper body muscles to include shoulders, chest, and back of the upper arms, and is related to the use of force involving pushing motion.

An applicant's ranking on the Employment List will be based on their final score which will be calculated as:

50% of the rating for the Written Test
50% of the rating for the Physical Fitness Assessment
Applicants that pass both the written examination and physical fitness assessment will be placed on the Civil Service list.
