What Financial Assistance Counseling (RCM) contributes to Cardinal Health Practice Operations Management oversees the business and administrative operations of a medical practice. Financial assistance counselors guide patients through their healthcare financial obligations. Position Summary: TheCoordinator, Financial Counselingis responsible forsupporting patients and providers by ensuringaccuratefinancial clearance, patient education, and identification of financial riskprior to services beingrendered. This role plays a critical part in theRevenue Cycleby improving reimbursement outcomes, minimizing financial risk, and enhancingthe patientexperience through proactive and transparent financial communication. Key Responsibilities Financial Counseling & Patient Support Review daily schedules toidentifypatientsrequiringfinancial clearance. Educate patients on expectedfinancial responsibility, including: Deductibles Copayments Coinsurance Out-of-pocket maximums
Provide clear, compassionate communicationregardingtreatment costs and payment expectationsprior to TOS. Assistpatients in understanding their financial obligations prior to services.
Financial Risk Identification Evaluate potential financial risks associated with scheduled services, including: Proactivelyidentifyaccounts that may result in patient balance or denied claims. Escalate high-risk accounts to leadership orappropriate teamsfor review.
Denials Prevention & Support Collaborate with clinical and administrative teams to reduce the risk of claim denials. Support resolution of pre-service financial issues that mayimpactreimbursement. Assistinidentifyingtrends related to financial risk and patient responsibility.
Documentation & Compliance Maintainaccuratedocumentation of all financial discussions with patients. Ensureall notes are clear, complete, and compliant with organizational standards. Protect patient confidentialityin accordance withHIPAA standards.
Collaboration & Communication Work closely with clinical and administrative teams to ensure alignment on patient financial readiness. Communicate effectively with internal teams to supportaccurateandtimelyrevenue cycle processes. Provide exceptional customer service with empathy, professionalism, and respect.
Operational Excellence Manage multiple tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Demonstrate strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills. Maintain consistent attendance, punctuality, and teamwork. Supportadditionalduties and projectsas they areassigned.
Qualifications Minimum of 4 years of experience in a healthcare business office or revenue cycle rolepreferred Strong knowledge ofinsuranceandbenefits and patient Financial Assistance Programs Strong understanding of oncology treatment pathways Familiarity with high-cost oncology drugs, infusionservicesand specialty pharmacy billingpreferred Working knowledge of diagnosis drivenfinancial impact(metastatic vsearly stagetreatment cost difference)preferred Experience with billing systems and interpreting EOBs Proficiencyin Microsoft Office Suite Strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills Ability to navigate multiple systems with ease,i.e.EMR, Registration/PMS systems, VOB systems, verifying Auth and Financial clearance with minimal direction from supervisor(s) and leadership. Critical thinking and ability tothink outside the box, adapt to process and workflow changes easily. Experience in oncology or specialty carepreferred Working knowledge of: ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding, managed care concepts and fee structures Background in financial counseling or patient-facing financial roles
