Job Description


RESPONSIBILITIES

The sonographer role in the Vascular Center reflects a more comprehensive and robust set of clinical responsibilities when compared to job descriptions of other sonography positions. Functioning as a delegated agent of the provider, the Vascular Sonographer is expected to interact with patients at a higher level for both medical and educational purposes.These responsibilities require persistent education in the form of weekly vascular conferences and continual physician feedback and underscore a close working relationship between sonographer and providers.The team approach between clinician and sonographer creates a clinically potent and cost effective model while also enhancing the patient experience. Patients served include adults and older adults.


Under limited physician/practitioner supervision, the Vascular Sonographer

  • performs initial new patient clinical assessment including thorough review of patient history, medical records, and other diagnostic imaging for pertinent information
  • determines appropriate ultrasound(s) or Doppler examination(s) to be performed and orders noninvasive vascular ultrasound examinations on vascular providers behalf based on standing order algorithms
  • coordinates and triages inpatient orders
  • reviews all orders for appropriateness and may communicate directly with ordering providers to recommend adaptations to orders to ensure efficacy of the diagnostic objective as well efficient use of resources
  • evaluates any contraindications, insufficient patient preparation, and the patients inability or unwillingness to tolerate the examination and associated procedures
  • performs vascular diagnostic ultrasound and physiologic testing utilizing a variety of technical modifications that require independent judgment, ingenuity, and discretion to produce quality ultrasound images and Doppler information
  • seeks vascular consult from ordering physicians for patients with critical findings who are not under the care of vascular service
  • reviews exam results to create and transcribe an interpretation for the physicians review and signature
  • provides ultrasound guidance and provider assistance in sterile procedures in the operating room and bedside
  • conducts vascular screenings for the community both in the office and offsite
  • provides clinical instructorship and mentoring of diagnostic medical sonography students
  • educates medical and nurse practitioner students assigned to the vascular lab area in vascular testing methods and related practices
  • uses critical thinking to contribute to clinical decisions based on noninvasive testing results and other primary assessments
  • serves as an integral part of the interdisciplinary team
  • demonstrates a professional approach in his/her work with an emphasis on patient care and patient safety, and will assume responsibility for professional maintenance of his/her designated work area as required


Work Experience
  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • RVT certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Sonographers required, or must successfully complete RVT certification within two years of the date of hire or transfer into position
  • Graduation from an approved and accredited Ultrasound educational program required if certification is not yet obtained
  • Must possess experience and competence in vascular technology
  • Experience, determined to be adequate by Vascular Lab Administration, to operate equipment and evaluate images and waveforms is required
  • Current BLS certification or obtained prior to providing direct patient care is required

Pay Range:$40.61-$60.96
