Job Requirements

General Description:

The Service Line Coordinator is a professional leader who serves in a blended role of leadership and bedside nurse. The Coordinator is responsible for the assessment, coordination, implementation and evaluation of the delivery of safe and effective patient care. The Coordinator will work together with the Nurse Manager to facilitate, mentor and evaluate others to grow professionally and advance their knowledge and skills.In addition, the Service Line Coordinator will continuously assess the OR needs to ensure adequate resources for current and upcoming shifts by collaborating with the Nurse Manager. The Coordinator will be prepared to assume the duties of the Nurse Manager in her/his absence.The Coordinator will hold team members accountable by ensuring adherence to appropriate federal, state and local regulations, Professional Standards, hospital policies, procedures and guidelines.


Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

Professional Practice

  1. Serves as clinical resource to others
  2. Proficient in the care of unit specific patient population and functions effectively in roles specific to unit
  3. At the unit level, advances clinical practice and consistently integrates evidence into practice
  4. Initiates referrals and utilizes available resources within and outside the institution
  5. Coordinates the interdisciplinary plan of care for the patient and family (includes the physicians and anesthesiologists in the interdisciplinary team)
  6. Advises Clinical Coordinator on room assignments appropriate to the skill level of specialty service team members.
  7. Integrates holistic care in all patient encounters
  8. Actively demonstrates, supports and mentors others in UM BWMC model of care
  9. Assess unit-based patient education processes/materials

Practice Focus Areas:

  • Leads team to implement evidenced based practice standards
  • Leads unit-based efforts for developing, implementing, and evaluating relationship-based care
  • Develop and share presentation of a patient care case study
  • Develop and implement unit-based project in collaboration with unit leadership (develop guidelines, standards & policies)
  • Publication of a clinical practice article
  • Oversees unit-based patient education process

Professional Development

  1. Member of professional organization
  2. Demonstrates proficiency as a professional resource for the care team
  3. Mentors and coaches other nurses to advance their development
  4. Utilizes clinical expertise to teach nurses formally or informally
  5. Leads unit-based education and learning activities (Two (2) per year that could be: posters, storyboards, presenting in-services or group projects)
  6. Completes minimum of twenty (20) CEs annually (a minimum of 50% of the 20 continuing education hours must be directly related to the full scope of your certification and/or specialty; a minimum of 50% of your 20 continuing education hours must be formally approvedCEs)or successfully completes twelve (12) credit hours towards BSN or Masters degree

  • Leads unit based professional development activities; participates actively in divisional and organizational efforts
  • Leads formal and structured education at the divisional and organizational level
  • Mentors and coaches unit leaders or those assuming leadership roles on councils or governance initiatives.

  • Oversees or participates in unit orientation program
  • Evaluates effectiveness of unit-based educational activities
  • Develop a self-learning module packet or Learning Management System (LMS) module reviewed and approved by hospital education
  • Case presentation for unit, department or within the organization
  • Provides classes/skills validation to employees in BLS, ACLS, PALS, NRP and other certifications
  • Board/Committee member of a professional organization

Organizational Innovation

  1. Leads efforts to address Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators (NSQI), National Hospital Quality Measures, National Patient Safety Goals and HCAHPS. Develops, implements and evaluates action plans at unit level
  2. Based on review of data, prioritizes top unit patient safety issues and leads team to develop and implement improvement plans.
  3. Monitors room turnover, equipment and instrumentation availability, case setups and on time starts.
  4. Identifies alternatives that represent improvement to existing supplies and equipment.
  5. Recommends changes and improvements to operations and prepares justification of same.
  6. Utilizes elements of research in development of action plans and support implementation at unit level.
  7. Oversees/participates in regulatory sites visits (mock and actual); helps prepare the unit and staff on an ongoing basis.
  8. Models UM BWMC Standards of Service Excellence; applies best practices for optimal patient experience

Practice Focus Areas:

  • Participates in hospital-based process improvement activities
  • Leads efforts for RBC at unit level; develops and implements action plans to address initiatives
  • Trends quality data on a consistent basis and leads efforts to address deficiencies
  • Community outreach, patient family classes, supports groups, etc.
  • Serves as change agent in unit issues/processes

Leadership

  1. Serves as an expert preceptor or mentor to others in preceptor role; plans clinical orientation
  2. Collaboratively practices with other healthcare team members (including physicians and anesthesiologists).
  3. Initiates team building efforts on unit
  4. Fully participates in, recruits and orientsnurses to unit-/hospital-based committees or councils
  5. Role models and holds peers accountable for AACN guidelines for Healthy Work Environment (communication, collaboration, effective decision making, recognition, leadership and staffing).
  6. Identifies opportunities for debriefing.
  7. Participates in development of standards for unit operations (as an interdisciplinary liaison-lab, pharmacy, equipment, scheduling, etc.).
  8. Leads efforts that support Service Line Operations to include equipment maintenance, procedure scheduling, vendor management, technology, instrumentation, etc.
  9. Develops and maintains specialty service preference cards.
  10. Recommends personnel for hiring based upon behavioral interview.
  11. Drafts performance reviews/performance improvement plans and shares with manager.
  12. Monitors utilization and cost of supplies; enforces charging mechanisms.
  13. Supports cost containment efforts through conservation of supplies and care of equipment.

  • Serves as charge nurse or unit leader incorporating unit specific goals
  • Lead unit governance initiatives
  • Identifies areas impacting unit operations and assists in developing/implementing action plans
  • Leads in unit Rewards and Recognition activities on unit
  • Leads unit based peer review process
  • Leads unit operation efforts such as: equipment maintenance, scheduling payroll, supply utilization monitoring
  • Perform in a role as a committee chair or co-chair

V.Patient Safety

Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.

Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.

Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority

Implements policies, procedure, and standards consistently in the performance of assigned duties.

Develops effective working relationships and maintains good communication with other team members.

Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.

Working Conditions

  1. Weekend, shift work, holiday, on-call, and overtime may be required.
  2. Work requires maximum lifting weight of 35 lbs when participating in patient care tasks up to 50% of the time to position and/or assist patients on to carts or into wheelchairs or beds, and generally, with ambulation.Work requires standing, sitting, bending and/or walking for up to 100% of scheduled work time; maximum lifting weight of 50 lbs when lifting equipment and supplies.Requires hearing/listening to differentiate sounds.Visual acuity is necessary to read labels, charts, documents and use various instruments.
  3. There is potential for regular exposure to patients possessing infectious diseases requiring observance of universal precautions requiring wearing protective clothing, gloves, and mask as appropriate, and observance of safe work practices.
  4. Potential to be floated to like units with like skill sets based on acuity and census.
  5. Works inside a clean, well-lighted environment. May be exposed to frequent interruptions and multiple crisis situations.May be physically or verbally abused by patients.Expected to work on rotating shifts including weekends and holidays, as necessary.May be expected to work on other than regular unit to provide adequate staffing, if the need arises.Participates in temporary assignment measures of department of Nursing.Potential for regular exposure to communicable diseases and hazardous materials, requiring the observance of Standard (Universal) Precautions and safe handling practices.This position has been classified as medium exposure risk and requires the completion of an annual respirator mask fitting and infection control measures, as applicable.



Work Experience

Minimum Education Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited nursing education program approved by the Board of Nursing or found by the Board to be substantially equivalent to the programs in Maryland.
  • BS from college of nursing (or MSN) or professional certification.
  • Currently licensed as an RN in the state of Maryland.

Qualifications

  • At least 2 years of OR experience.
  • Service Line Coordinator experience and charge nurse experience strongly preferred.
  • American Heart Association (AHA) BLS required upon hire
  • Must meet all unit specific certification requirements: (PALS, ACLS, NRP)
  • Maintains Professional Certification
  • Maintains all Service Line Coordinator core expectations
  • Must maintain 1.0 FTE
  • No discipline greater than a verbal counseling within the past year
  • Meets satisfactory level or higher on last two performance appraisals (if applicable)
  • Ability to learn and use computer systems in order to manage patient information
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
