NY Post cartoon seems to link Obama to dead chimp

NEW YORK - The New York Post is standing behind a cartoon that some have
interpreted as comparing President Barack Obama to a violent chimpanzee
gunned down by police.

The cartoon in Wednesday's Post by Sean Delonas shows two police officers
standing over the body of a bullet-riddled chimp. One of the officers says
the other, "They'll have to find someone else to write the next stimulus
bill."

Civil rights activist Al Sharpton called the cartoon "troubling at best
given the historic racist attacks of African-Americans as being synonymous
with monkeys."

But Sharpton said the Post should clarify the point it was trying to make
with the cartoon, which was playing off Monday's rampage by a pet chimpanzee
in Stamford, Conn., that left a woman severely mauled. Police ended up
killing the chimp.

In a statement, Post Editor-in-Chief Col Allan said: "The cartoon is a clear
parody of a current news event, to wit the shooting of a violent chimpanzee
in Connecticut. It broadly mocks Washington's efforts to revive the economy.
Again, Al Sharpton reveals himself as nothing more than a publicity
opportunist."

A story about the cartoon on the liberal-leaning Huffington Post Web site
drew hundreds of reader responses, many calling the cartoon racist and
insensitive.

Sam Stein, a columnist for the site, wrote that "at its most benign, the
cartoon suggests that the stimulus bill was so bad, monkeys may as well have
written it. Most provocatively, it compares the president to a rabid chimp.
Either way, the incorporation of violence and (on a darker level) race into
politics is bound to be controversial."

Not a good time for me specially since I am re-reading Malcolm -X for the third time in my life in celebration of Black History Month.

Marquerite Burgess Thursday, February 19th 2009 at 12:31PM

LOL. Reading Malcolm X can truly bring out another side of a person. This is disgraceful and to have this paper attempt to justify this people in the manner is even worst. Trying to say it had nothing to do with Pres. Obama or an attempt to make a correlation is a flat out lie. Now if the statement that was make in the bubble from the officer's mouth made no reference to the signing of the stimulus package then it would be a different story, but they did and it is very racist.

Lets be honest, SlaveAmericans were Slaves cause MasterAmericans said we were Monkeys.----A Firestone manager called ME a monkey once and I sued and got a new set of tires for my Classic Bill Blass Edition 77 Lincoln Mark V-working 8track and Cartier Clock.

By MasterAmerican standards I might be considered a Japanese monkey, my dad a gorilla, my mom once called me a monkey, a drunk called my brother a monkey--MasterAmerican Science says we ALL came from Monkeys, Abraham and Lot and Jews have a thing with Monkeys--I like Monkey bread -who cares!

Our Attorney General Eric Holder will take care of the Judges, FBI, FAs, SAs, DAs, and the other Law enforcement, all we got to do is sit back and enjoy the Change We Can Believe In.

Mr. Powell has his moments of light? well the NAACP got involved because they looked mighty weak to meet in New York and not issue a statement.

Corey--this is a political TERRORIST THREAT. IT IS NOT JUST the cartoonist's take..he has to work in accordance with the views of the editor, this is corporate style notjustyourmomma'snews.
Having a bad day has nothing to do with it--all work has to be approved.

Marta speaking as someone who has been there, tried that PEACE ROUTH, I am now ready for that NEW-OLD, "By any means necessary" attitude of Malcom-X.

We need to do more than send those nooses on those trees and the Rupert Murdoch's fine print underground for only fifty years. We need to put them out of business for the present and future generations of Our grandchildren who need protection like 'yesterday' in Jena La.. New York and here in Ca. and even more so in our public schools!!!!!

To me that phoney apology in the oped in the New York Post was even more of an offense to me not just as an African-American but a member of the human race, an American, a law abiding citizen, etc.

ROBINSON IRMA Thursday, April 10th 2014 at 6:47PM

The NAACP is here.At long last!!!!!

You are correct in seeing what --------- says as a joke and I can not wait to see all of those being CUT due to the coming boycott laughing all of the way to the poor house. The apology nor using the editor, cartoonest as a scape goat is going to work. This is all about doing the work of Rupart Murdoch which has been allowed to go on for way too too long.He has got to be hit where it hurts in the pocket book much like the KKK was made bankrupt to affect them at least for a short time until the Rght Wing- Conservatives took over for them by way of the media...

As, I can not stress enough about how we are going back, say for example, a lot of those who speak about this issue have never even seen an actual BOYCOOT beyond that fantasy of TV / the movies....it is not a pretty thing when done as it was in the pass for those who the boycott is against.

It is a new day for education by way of truth, reality and openess...
